Aulostomus maculatus

(Atlantic Trumpetfish)

Family: Aulostomidae

Distribution: Caribbean

We have recorded sounds for this species associated with interspecific agonistic interactions. The sudden movement and sound production may be a defense mechanism in these interactions.

Subtle and low frequency sounds may require headphones to hear.

The Smithsonian species pages have additional information on this species (habitat, range, phases, etc.).

FEC-00014

Agonistic interaction with Stegastes partitus. This sound is ascribed to Aulostomus maculatus due to its sudden tail movement and the sound's dissimilarity to other recordings of Stegastes. It is unclear whether this is active or passive (movement) sound production. Noise from divers makes sound difficult to hear, headphones recommended.

FEC-00013

Agonistic interaction with Stegastes partitus. These sounds are ascribed to Aulostomus maculatus due to their dissimilarity to other recordings of Stegastes, the relative location of the powermap, and the Aulostomus' sudden movement. It is unclear whether this is active or passive (movement) sound production.

FEC-00015

Agonistic interaction with Stegastes partitus. This sound is ascribed to Aulostomus maculatus due to its sudden movement and the sound's dissimilarity to other recordings of Stegastes. It is unclear whether this is active or passive (movement) sound production.
